This course compares the Ukrainian and Dutch national cultures. Against this background you may discover the aspects with which you have difficulties in this relationship. Other aspects may be difficult for many people but not for you. This is also one of the reasons why dealing with cultures is ultimately an individual question.

The course consists of three parts: background of culture, specific aspects of cultural differences and a few remarks on dealing with culture. In that first part you may think of a definition of culture, a model of culture, basic perceptions of culture, identity, multicultural society and the transformation process in Central and Eastern Europe. The second part mentions some specifics in a general way without going into the differences between the two countries. You may think of symbols and heroes, nature/nurture, functions of culture, (social) media, food and drinks, the arts, religion and history. The core of the second part of this course is 16 aspects in which the position of the Ukraine and the Netherlands is outlined and where you may determine your own position. Finally, the third part briefly discusses dealing with culture and in particular, the cultural competence.

If you want more information, you may subscribe to one of the 23 other courses on this website (www.culturalcompetence.eu). You may also go to the mind-map of culture (another tab on this website). This mind-map consists of over 100 topics of culture. When you click on a label on the right you go down in the mind-map (to more specific topics) and when you click on a label on the left you move up. On each label you have three icons, one with a summary of the theory of that topic, one with a self-assessment exercise and one with quotes from students, living and working abroad, indicating the practice.

This interactive video shows 72 houses on a map of Cultural City. Each house represents a topic of the mind-map of culture. At each house you may click on two buttons, theory and exercise. If you click on theory you will see a summary of the theory on the topic in question. If you click on exercise you will see a self-assessment exercise.

Just some exercises!

In this course all topics of the mind-map of culture are discussed through an illustration, an introduction with theoretical background, quotes representing topics, interactive exercises and feedback to these exercises.
